Jeff Lukye and his family received some exciting news yesterday from the Saskatchewan government. During question period at the Saskatchewan Legislature building, Health Minister Don McMorris announced the costs for Jeff's cancer treatment would be covered by the government of Saskatchewan.

Jeff was diagnosed with colorectal cancer two years ago which had forced doctors to remove most of his colon. After months of chemotherapy, Jeff was deemed cancer free. But this summer the cancer returned. Only this bout required a very radical and extreme procedure which is not legally offered in Canada. This surgery is available at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, but will cost the Lukye family approximately $300,000.

The family had sent a request to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health to help cover the cost of the surgery. After yesterday's announcement from the Health Minister, the Lukye family was ecstatic when they learned their offer was accepted. Jeff's wife, Keri, shares her enthusiasm.

Jeff will now travel to Minnesota next week to begin the first stages of his treatment. Keri expects to return home sometime in January where Jeff will begin another stage of chemotherapy.
