A much-used intersection here in Estevan is going to be getting an upgrade after the province announced the recipients of their traffic safety fund grant yesterday.

That intersection, located on King Avenue and 13th Street, is located on two of the busiest roads in the city and has plenty of foot traffic going through.

That's why the proposed upgrades are focusing on pedestrian safety through the intersection.

The city's Roads and Drainage Manager Norm Mack details exactly what they've been doing with that intersection over the last while.

"Last year we did some upgrading with a traffic pole relocation and some new LED lights, that was phase one and we received 40,000 for that project. It was just announced a couple days ago we applied for part two of that intersection. We'll be putting up the center pole and be upgrading the pedestrian lights with LED countdowns, and we received another $40,00 from SGI," said Mack, "Thank you to them."

The increased safety won't just benefit the citizens of Estevan, as Mack says that both the city and SGI will see benefits from the improved intersection.

"It will be just to increase safety, it's a win-win for the city of Estevan and SGI, with lower accident rates with increased safety on our traffic lights," said Mack, "It's a winning situation for both of us."

While those changes won't be put in right away, it's still a possibility that those upgrades will be in the intersection before the winter's over.

"Phase 2 will have to wait for some of the weather to clear and some warmer temperatures," said Mack, "But I presume we're going to see some more upgrades on King and 13th intersection, a center pole, and some more lights, probably in that February-March-April period."

Mack says that the city will be looking at replacing some of the old pedestrian lights with new LED lights during the next round of SGI grants.
