Estevan's Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter hopes that a weekend free of any impaired driving charges sets the tone for a safe holiday season.

The Estevan Police Service reported that they discovered no impaired drivers during high-visibility check stops Saturday night. They engaged with more than 200 vehicles and conducted 14 mandatory roadside screening tests.

"I'm hoping maybe people are starting to get it, you know, planning a safe ride home," said founder of MADD's Estevan chapter, and national MADD board member Connie Hagel. "That may be the case for one weekend, but if we can keep the momentum going that would be great."

Hagel said there is no excuse to get behind the wheel while impaired, as there are many alternatives to finding your way home.

She mentioned walking, with temperatures getting back into the positives by the end of the week; the many cabs in town, with some companies offering an extra driver to get your vehicle home too; and leaning on some young drivers looking for some spending money over the holidays.

"There's a lot of teenagers around that need sort of a little extra money for Christmas. Rely on those teenagers to get you home if you have a teenager in your life or if you know of a teenager that's willing for a couple of bucks to drive you home, take advantage of that. Just plan ahead, there's no excuse."
