The Estevan Meter Bruins U13 AA have had an up and down season so far.  Although one of their scheduled game was forced to be canceled due, the team is holding their head high and ready to take on whatever the season has in store for them.

“I think we have a very competitive team. We've got a team with kids with a lot of talent, a lot of speed and from what I've seen in the first few games, they just they never quit and that's going to go a long way,” said Head coach, Trevor Deichert.

He continued to explain that this year, the team has prioritized improving their gameplay as having heavily focused on working on their power plays and penalty kills, and the little things such as methods to get the puck out of their own end.

Teamwork is also a big deal for the U13 AA team, as there is always a slight tension between the now second-year players vs those newly joining the ream.

“We have four returning veterans from last year, so we're looking to them to be leaders on the ice as well. We have a lot of new players. These kids are all really great and they get along really well. I'm really happy with the chemistry that I'm seeing on and off the ice with these guys. I think it's led to the success we've had already.”

Ten of the team players are from Estevan and the remaining residents are in the surrounding area.

In terms of scheduling, COVID-19 hasn’t affected the Meter Bruins a whole lot.

“We practice twice a week. We do head out of town for practice once a week, but practice is the same. The only thing that's really been affected, our tournaments which, you know, is disappointing. That's a good opportunity for team bonding. Definitely not too bad.”

As with everything else these days, both the league and the team have also been affected by COVID-19. Changing include limited game viewers, coaches and players must be masked when in the box and in dressing rooms. Regardless the team is just happy to be playing.

Their next game will be a home game against Melville this weekend and Deichert believes that it should be a well-matched battle that can't be missed.
