Close to the Manitoba border, just east of the town of Redvers sits the French speaking hamlet of Bellegarde, part of our listening audience at Golden West for 50 years!

Bellegarde is part of the RM of Storthoaks Number 31. Its population is considered a part of the RM as a whole, since it is currently under 100. It sits right in the heart of the southeast close to Moose Mountain Provincial Park and Cannington Manor Historical Provincial Park.

French settlers moving west from Manitoba made a couple of efforts at setting up shop in the area before finally clearing farmland and officially founding Bellegarde in the late 1890s. Settlers from France were joined by several from Belgium as well.

Today, Bellegarde is home to fewer than 100 residents and is still surrounded by the farmland their founders worked so hard to clear. It is home to a French school that goes up to grade 12. Salut, Bellegarde!
