Kelley Brinkworth with SGI shared what she thought are the biggest tips to ensure safe driving in the winter months.

First and foremost Brinkworth mentioned that slowing down is number 1. Brinkworth stated that posted speed limit signs are for ideal driving conditions and if there is any blowing snow, reduced visibility or ice on the road, your speed should be adjusted accordingly.

Kelley also stated it's important to give yourself enough distance between yourself and the car in front of you to ensure ample stopping distance in case you catch some black ice. Giving yourself enough time to commute between destinations also is a way to ensure that you aren't rushed and forced to potentially drive a little faster than what is actually safe. Be sure to clean off all snow and ice from your vehicle before you make your commute. Often times drivers do not and are unsafe on the roads because of that simple fact. Winter tires and winter wiper blades can also help ensure you arrive safely at your destination.

Lastly, Brinkworth noted checking the forecast and the highway hotline to check the conditions and what you may encounter on the roads, is very important.
