The big day is here. The Estevan City Council will be discussing how they will be allocating taxpayer dollars throughout 2017, taking YOUR feedback in consideration. Some of the topics are straight-forward and needs no mention. However, there are a few that peaks the community's interest.

  • 2017 Budget - Councillors will be looking at the feedback from the resident and make their decisions in terms of how money will be spent this year. With that said, the proposed plan is available HERE.
  • Speed Humps on Wellock Road - As many may recall, the topic split the previous Council in two on September 12, 2016. Police Chief Paul Ladouceur brought up STATISTICS, which was conducted on Wellock Road, that shocked everyone in the room. He brought up the idea of adding speed humps in the area and mentioned that it will deter motorists from speeding where two schools and a park is located. However, there were MIXED REACTIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY towards the proposal, so the Council deferred it to Budget Deliberations.
  • Regional Health Care Levy Bylaw - A  new bylaw is getting its first reading where, in Section 277 of the Cities Act, the City may pass a Special Tax Bylaw for a specific reason. In this case, they would like to raise $290,000 to be split two ways. $50,000 will be going towards a regional health care program that will help the entire city. The rest of of the amount will be going towards the City's commitment for the construction of the new regional nursing home.
  • Building Bylaw Deposit - In the previous Council Meeting, City Council brought up the possibility of adding a 5% deposit when purchasing a building permit in Estevan to counter unfinished projects in the city. Then, Councillor Travis Frank offered another solution: to impose a fine. City Clerk Judy Pilloud put together a report to address these proposal and will be brought up tonight.
  • Borrowing Funds for 2017 Projects - There are two projects that the City of Estevan want to deal with throughout the year. They are the purchase of the new FIRE HALL and Phase One of the King Street Rehabilitation Project. Collectively, they are looking to borrow $3.5 million for both projects.

Stay tuned here at DiscoverEstevan.com, as we will have a recap of the discussion shortly after the meeting.
