The Carlyle Cardinals continue to rack up championships.

The senior men's baseball team edged the Standard Hill Lakers 5-3 Sunday in Yorkton to claim the 2023 AA Tier 2 title.

Two weeks removed from winning their fourth-consecutive Saskota Baseball League crown, Carlyle started their weekend with a 4-2 loss to the Yorkton Marlins on Saturday, before rattling off four straight wins.

They topped the North Battleford Beavers 7-5 on Saturday, then gutted out wins in back-to-back-to-back games on Sunday - 11-6 over the Saskatoon Rockies, 18-1 over Standard Hill, and then the 5-3 championship win.

"We had great pitching performances as we usually do and a lot of timely hitting was key for us this weekend," said Cardinals outfielder and head coach Brent McLean.

McLean said Kody Rock - a 6-foot-4 righty that was part of the Milwaukee Brewers organization - was a big piece of their success on Sunday.

"We had great pitching from Kody Rock. He went 11 innings yesterday and we really rode him throughout the day."

Next up for the Cardinals is a trip just across the provincial border to Oak River, Man. for Westerns this weekend.

McLean said they were limited to an extra guy or two on the bench at provincials, but should have more reinforcements on the way.

"We're expecting tough competition for sure. I mean we're going to see the best teams in each of the four provinces, that plus the host team. So we're going to be in tough there and we'll have to play really well to win some games there."

McLean added that it's the first time the Cardinals will be competing in Westerns.

The other teams will be South Delta (B.C.), the Parkland Twins (Alta.) the Border All-Stars (Man.), and the hosting Oak River Dodgers.
