An Estevan man faces a pair of charges after a nine-hour standoff in which he barricaded himself in his house.

The Estevan Police Service announced that the 62-year-old was charged on Monday with two counts of assault following the February 8 incident on the 600 block of 4th Street in Estevan.

Police reports at the time said they were called to a report of a domestic assault around 9:40 a.m. that day. The Estevan Police Service and Weyburn Police Service's Joint Tactical Support Team was joined by the RCMP and crisis negotiators and surrounded the house until the suspect emerged and surrendered to police around 7 p.m.

Police said the man was the only person inside the residence during the standoff. A second person had left the residence.

The man appeared to be in mental distress, according to police and eye-witness reports.

The next day, Estevan Police Chief Rich Lowen said the man, who they did not identify, would undergo a "medical assessment" before police determined whether to lay charges.

Police said the man was released on a number of conditions and will appear in court in April.
