Yesterday, 32 Estevan Comprehensive School athletes took part in a regional track meet in Weyburn. 15 of the athletes are now preparing for provincials next week.

In addition to qualifying for provincials, some athletes received additional awards at the track meet.

"Four students received the Aggregate Award, which means they collected the most points in their age category," explained Brayden McLean, head coach of the track team.

The athletes who won the Aggregate Awards are:

  • Aiden Sullivan placed first in the 800-metre high jump and second in the 1,500-metre race and 3,000-metre race.
  • Lila Hale placed first in the triple jump and long jump, and second in the high jump.
  • Kimi Zepeda placed first in the 3,000-metre, second in the 100-metre, and third in the 1,500-metre and 800-metre.
  • Megan Porter placed first in the quadrathlon, with the highest cumulative points in the shot put, long jump, 800-metre, and 100-metre.

McLean said he has seen a lot of growth in the team this year and a growing interest in track overall.

"Six were there last year and then we have nine new athletes attending provincials this year."

He noted that there is more interest from Grade 9 and 10 students this year, which is promising for the team's future.

The team is now preparing for provincials, which are just a week away.

"We’ll be practicing probably in the morning and after school next week, and we head up to Saskatoon on Thursday," McLean said.
