One of the top young golfers from the Estevan area, Jace Carlisle has been no stranger to recognition from Golf Saskatchewan throughout his career on the links. Today, he got a little more recognition from them.

Carlisle won one of two Graham DeLaet Scholarships worth $1500, the highest value scholarship Golf Saskatchewan gives out. Hudson Chernoff, who golfs out of the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club as well, received the Garry Hayes Memorial Scholarship worth $742.61.

"It means a lot especially in these trying times right now," Carlisle said. "Every little bit is going to help. With everybody struggling to make some money, anything I can get I'll take it. Getting the biggest scholarship they offer is a big accomplishment."

The dollar value was a big boost for Carlisle, who just finished his freshman year at Lake Superior State University, but will be transferring before the new season. Winning a scholarship with DeLaet's name attached put a little bit wider of a smile on his face as well.

"Everybody knows, if they're avid golfers in Saskatchewan, who he is," he said. "Just having his name there and getting an honor with his name on it means a lot."

Carlisle has done his best to stay on top of his offseason training, but for him, as for many other athletes, it's been a bizarre few months. He's been working at Woodlawn's golf course for the summer and he's seen some of that weirdness firsthand.

"I know us here at the golf course we're struggling to have green fees with the tee time thing, we can't have as many players out as we would like," he said. "We're trying to make do with what we can do right now and we've made some changes that have helped us out a lot."

Another concern for Carlisle is getting back south of the border for his next college season. The government of Canada announced today the border would be closed to non-essential travel until at least July 21.

"We haven't heard anything from the NCAA as far as if we're going to play or not yet," said Carlisle. "Hopefully we can get some tournaments under our belts here as soon as possible and get back down for school."
