Football season has returned to the southeast, as three Estevan teams are getting ready to kick off their first games this weekend.

The Elecs high school team is starting off their season with a home game at Woodlawn Regional Park, while the U14 Chargers and the U12 Oilers will be heading to Moose Jaw, facing down the Peacock, Spartans, and Vikings respectively.

The teams have been practicing and playing exhibition games through the last few weeks, so they're heading to the start of the season ready.

Elecs Head Coach Mark Schott says that his team is excited to be back on the field.

"We're definitely excited to get going we have a young team of mostly grade 9s and 10s, rounded out with grade 11s. We have no grade 12s this year, so our team is young but we're full of energy and we're excited to hit the field on Saturday against the peacocks."

The Elecs will be opening the football season on Saturday at 2 pm, with the Chargers following close behind playing at 3.

The Oilers will then play on Monday, at 3 pm as well.

The teams are well prepared after multiple weeks of practice and a few exhibition games.

"they're ready to go, we've been at it since mid-August on the practice field, and we had a taste of game action in our exhibition games," said Schott, "Saturday will be our first real game action, and I think the kids are really looking forward to it and we're excited to see what we can do lining up against an opposing team in a true game format."

Those kids have been preparing in hot summer weather and will be getting more of it over the weekend as temperatures stay above 30.

"It's definitely hot, we've been giving frequent water breaks," said Schott, "At the same time, the temperature's the same for both teams. It's going to be a hot one on Saturday as well, and we just have to make good use of our subs and be well hydrated, and just do what we can on the field."

Other teams will also be starting their seasons this September, with the U10 Estevan Cudas playing on September 11 and the U18 Estevan Viragos beginning on September 17.
