For those that don't already know, the Estevan Junior Roller Derby has been gaining popularity since it's arrival almost six years ago. Roller derby is a sport played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues world wide and it continues to gain steam in the southeast.

"In February it will be our sixth season," Roller Derby Coach Lorelei Lachambre said. "We're growing and really excited about the sport. We're always looking for new members to join and specifically for girls in grades 4-12. So were are doing a recruitment for our September start at the Bienfait Rink on Thursday the 14th and Sunday the 17th of September."

Should those interested in joining have any questions before hand, there will be a table at city wide on September 7th.

"We have a package to give to people that explains what roller derby is about along with what equipment is needed and the cost the comes along with it. If they cant make it to city wide that's alright, they can just show up to our recruitment."

Lachambre also mentioned a great initiative they have if you're interested in giving the sport a try.

"So they don't even have to buy the equipment to try it out. We provide it free of charge and they get to try it out for a month before they have to commit to joining. So it's a really good thing even if you remotely thought maybe your daughter would like to try this out but don't want to have to put the money in yet. It's just a great sport where you can just come and try it to see if it's a good fit for you."

"The thing about roller derby is a lot of people don't know the sport, they didn't grow up seeing it. It's something you just have to jump in and try it to see if you like it. If you try it for a couple of weeks you'll know if it's your thing or not. You won't be out any money or equipment so there's really no harm in trying it."

One aspect of the sport people might not know about is the fact that it is a full contact sport. Lachambre explained that shouldn't turn girls away who are interested in playing, as they fully prepare everyone to be comfortable with contact.

"That makes them very nervous, but for Septmber, October and November we focus on skating skills and getting people comfortable. We practice how to stop, start and how to fall and get up properly. We're not going to throw people into a game that has full contact until they have all the skills. So they do not have to worry about contact coming into play until they are very stable on their skates."

City wide registration takes place Thursday, September 7th from 5:30 - 8:30 inside the Power Dodge Ice Centre.
