Working in or traveling to Redvers, you might notice your cell phone service gets a little bit hit-and-miss. Residents of the town have certainly noticed this. So on the night of Wednesday, February 26, at their town council meeting, they'll be examining the possibility of a new cell phone tower with a more powerful signal.

"They (Sasktel) ran out of room where they are in Redvers right now," said town CAO Bonnie Rutten, who said it would be awesome to get better cell service. "So they're going to move it and build a bigger tower."

Rutten described the current cell phone service in Redvers as "patchy". The new cell phone tower hasn't yet received council approval, which they would be hoping to get at the meeting that night.

The one stumbling block for the tower is where they would have to move. According to Rutten, the new proposed location would be on Railway Avenue, which would put it practically in the back yards of a few residents, and close to some local businesses as well.

"They've employed a public consultation, placing a notice in the local newspaper," Rutten said. "So all the properties in the area have to be ok with the tower before they even go ahead with it."

Part of that consultation is not only placing an ad in the local paper, but also sending out information packages to any dwellings within a prescribed 185-meter radius. Rutten says she thinks the new cell tower will be a good thing for Redvers, but the people living around the proposed site have to decide if they're comfortable with a tower that big that close to them. The new tower will be three times the height of the one Redvers has at the moment.

Council meetings in Redvers happen twice a month at the town office on Railway Avenue
