Changes are on their way to SARCAN. The recycling depot will open its doors beginning on June 15 as the provincial government gave them the green light.

Sean Homenick with SARCAN said they are very excited to be opening back up after a two and a half month hiatus and that those who go to their facilities often will notice an immediate change.

"The first thing that you're going to recognize is that there's a recycling guide at the depot. Someone's going to be greeting you at the Estevan depot to let you know what your return options are, as well as what our safety precautions are."

Upon entering they will immediately let people who would be able, to start using their new drop and go method. The program was created two years ago and allows you to create an online account, head to the depot, tag your bags with a barcode from said account, and leave your recycling at the facility. SARCAN will then give you the option of an e-transfer payment or to pick up a cheque.

If you are bringing in an extremely large load, there are options for you as well.

"We're going to be trying to put together a bulk drop off for you in the back of the depot that will allow you to get paid by cheque if you have over 75-dollars."

If you are joining a general line and walking to a shoot, there will be precautions in place. These include physical distancing with markers on the floor to show you where to stand, there will also be a physical barrier that will separate you and the staff.

There will be new cleaning procedures as well that will see a more concentrated effort to prevent the spread of germs.

As for a timeline for when and if their operations will return to the way they were before, Homenick isn't positive but said these new measures will be in place for the foreseeable future.

"We're kind of preparing customers for a longer wait time this summer because of the backlog, because of physical distancing not allowing us to have as many people in the depot and only being allowed to have one person counting on each shoot."

They are hoping that as things move along and continue to open up in the province that they will be able to move closer to normal, but that change should not be expected until at least the end of summer or around that timeframe.
