Around 160 kids, parents, grandparents, coaches and volunteers filed into the Pleasantdale School gym on Monday evening for the first ever Estevan Minor Baseball Awards Night.

Master of Ceremonies Blaine Kovach, the High Performance Director of Estevan Minor Baseball who is also the Head Coach of the Southeast AAA Twins, explained how the night came to fruition.

"This all started with the President of Estevan Minor Baseball Ryan Siever, he wanted to start an awards night and it took off from there. Its nice to finally start recognizing the players and coaches. So many other communities do this and it was about time that Estevan stood up and finally did this ourselves," Kovach concluded.

Siever was quick to credit Minor Baseball Secretary, Audrey MacMurchy and Twins Coach Blaine Kovach for their involvement with the awards night.

"Audrey and Blaine did a lot of the leg work, I really appreciate all the work they did. It was nice to see it come together really well."

"Seeing the kids as they're getting their awards coming up with big smiles on their faces was definitely worth while. It was nice to hear stories on how they improved and how they played this year. It reinforced what I saw on the field," Siever said with enthusiasm.

"We had a great turnout tonight."

"It was a lot of fun to put this together," Secretary Audrey MacMurchy said at Monday nights awards. "Its nice to come here and see all these players get recognized for the great year they had."

One of the major awards handed out was for Volunteer of The Year. As this year marks the first ever awards night in Estevan Minor Baseball, it allowed for the award to be named after its first winner, Kent Phillips.

"Its a huge honor, there are a lot of people who put a lot of hours into this organization. I was lucky enough to work under Mel Murray, who in my opinion has been the best volunteer that Estevan Minor Ball has ever seen. For me to learn from him to see what it takes to keep a program going, all the hard work I saw him do, I just followed the same thing."

"My wife and I have had the opportunity to raise three boys in baseball. They played Mosquito ball all the way through Midget. It doesn't get old, I've enjoyed every minute of it"

Phillips three boys made their way through the Minor Ball system, but his love for the game has continued as he currently helps out with the Southeast AAA Twins.

The cherry on top of his night came in the form of a gift he received for all his hard work and dedication.

"I've been a Blue Jays fan since I was a kid. I remember sitting and watching when Carter hit the game winning home run in the 1993 World Series. It's a huge huge gift," Phillips said with a big smile.
