While adult Special Olympics have been a part of Estevan for a while now, there's been a bit of a lack of opportunity for the kids. However, Kandyce Meili wants to change that.

"We have two little girls who were diagnosed with a rare genetic condition. They've been in soccer, t-ball and gymnastics, all the sports we have around here, and they've done really well. However, all of the programs are always adapting for them, so we decided that we wanted to create something where it's not adapted for them, but made for them. We did a little bit of research and found out that Special Olympics are offering these programs, and we thought it was great for not only our kids, but others," she explained.

Meili will have a booth at City Wide Registration on September 6th with information for anyone interested. Two programs are offered...Active Start for ages 2-6, and Fundamentals for 7-12. Activities involve learning a variety of basic motor skills such as walking, running, jumping and throwing in a safe environment for the younger levels, and items such as swimming and basic sports skills are added as the kids progress.

She added that she hopes to have the programming arranged and ready to go by January, lasting 12 weeks. Depending on interest, they'd like to see it consist of fall/winter and spring/summer sessions.

"I know that there's a growing need for kids with any kind of disablilties in Estevan to have something that's geared towards them. So if we get three out, that's great. If we get 10 or 20, that's even better. However, many people want to sign up."

Volunteers and coaches will be needed as well, four or five for each program. Free training will provided by Special Olympics Saskatchewan in December.
