Tia Dayman is a grade 12 student at the Estevan Comprehensive High School. She is the yearbook co-editor, a member of the Social justice club, involved in pep rallies and school musicals and mentors younger students.

She was surprised and excited about receiving the award.

"It was such a surprise, such an honour," said Dayman. "All of those nominees are some of my closest friends and I have so much respect for everybody and so it feels really, really nice."

In addition to her school volunteer work, she also volunteers with the Junior Quota club, Estevan and area literacy group and with Diversified services where she created a human rights handbook which will be published soon.

"I don't really realize how big it sounds to everybody else. I do things because I like them, and because it helps other people and it makes them happy and that makes me happy. It's pretty nice to be recognized for that."

She was grateful to be nominated and expressed her respect for the other nominees.

"I'm so thankful to my teachers, my family, my friends and all my other fellow nominees. Everyone is just so supportive. This is such a great event and every woman here is so deserving."

This fall, she is planning to study humanities at the University of Toronto.
