Some good news was announced on Friday, as the provincial government attempted to assuage some of the shock that was seen in response to the budget that was released last week.

They are capping the grants-in-lieu reduction to municipalities at no more than 30% of the amount that a municipality receives in revenue sharing.

While the decision to cancel the cuts resulted in the majority having their revenue sharing reduced by about 15% or less, larger centers felt the burn as some saw an excess of 30% loss. As a result the decision was made to limit the amount that the municipalities will lose.

This means that nine cities that previously groaned at the heavy financial burden that was placed on them will now have some relief, including the Energy City.

Estevan previously was looking at the imminent task of coming up with an additional $900,000 to make up for the cuts in funding.

Following the announcement, that figure now sits at $649,167.

Stay tuned, more to come on this story.
