Estevan's annual Football Weekend is kicking off three days of sports with one match tonight, and even more to come over the next few days.

All the games will be held in Estevan at the Woodlawn Field, with teams ranging from both Estevan Minor Football and Estevan Comprehensive School playing on the field.

Estevan Minor Football President Kevin Mortenson explains the weekend's starting game.

"This weekend is Football Weekend in Estevan," said Mortenson, "We have every football team in Estevan hosting a football game over the course of the weekend. The weekend starts tonight at 7 o clock, the ECS high school Elecs are hosting the Weyburn Eagles so we're pretty excited to have the high school team back, it's been pretty much 2 years since they've been able to field their team."

Estevan Minor Football will be providing the rest of the games for the weekend.

"Tomorrow, Estevan Minor Football starts their games. At 12 o clock the Estevan Chargers host the Weyburn Ravens, following the chargers is the U14 Estevan Oilers hosting the Yorkton Gritters, which should be a real good game."

"Then at 6 o clock, the Estevan Viragoes will be hosting the Melville Vipers, which will be our first time seeing that team we didn't deal with the team last year due to covid restrictions, so we're really looking forward to that."

"The weekend will be concluding on Sunday 1 o clock in the afternoon, the Estevan Cuda's will be hosting their jamboree," said Mortenson, "Jamborees are six-man football. Estevan and Weyburn will be splitting their teams in two so there will actually be 4 teams there, and then Moose Jaw will be bringing 3 teams."

Also on Sunday, EMF will be drawing for their Groceries For A Year lottery.

Unfortunately, the weekend won't have any special presentations over the weekend, though they will likely happen later in the season.

Mortenson says that so far it's shaping up to be a great weekend for the sport.

"I'm really happy that the weather forecast is looking good for us all weekend," said Mortenson, "30 above might be a bit hard on the players, but we're conditioned, shouldn't be a problem. I'm just glad that the sun's out and it's plus 30 and not minus 30 on Saturday."

The events over the weekend will not be affected by most of the restrictions that were put in place earlier this week, though players may have to mask up while in the changing rooms.
