Traffic enforcement officers in Saskatchewan were busy in June, according to numbers released by SGI Wednesday morning.

SGI said there were 1,097 distracted driving offences, including 970 for using a mobile phone while driving. That is the highest number of distracted driving offences reported in a single month all year. It's also the first time the monthly number has exceeded 1,000 since 2019, SGI said.

There were also 706 seatbelt and car seat offences reported in June, which SGI said is the second highest number ever reported since the Traffic Safety Spotlights began.

SGI's June Traffic Safety Spotlight focused on impaired driving. Saskatchewan law enforcement reported 410 people driving while over the legal limit of alcohol or drugs last month, including 169 Criminal Code charges and 241 administrative suspensions for exceeding provincial limits.

Finally, police reported 5,121 drivers who received tickets for speeding or other aggressive driving offences in June. SGI said that number was actually lower than average for the number of speeders in June.
