After Wednesday saw them called out to a deck fire first thing in the morning and a woodpile fire in the afternoon, Thursday didn't really prove to be any more restful for the Estevan Fire Department. This time, rather than being called to homes and campsites, their calls took them literally to the streets.

Two different calls for car crashes brought the department into action, one early on in the evening and one a little bit later. Nobody was seriously hurt in either call, though the first of the two had all the makings of a bad accident.

"At about ten after six fire crews were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision that had occurred east of Bienfait on a grid road," said Fire Chief Dale Feser. "Crews did arrive to find that a collision had indeed occurred between a highway transport truck and one-ton pickup truck. Thank goodness, both drivers were ambulatory and relatively uninjured as a result of the collision."

Both drivers were lucky to escape serious injury, not only because of the size of the vehicles involved but because the highway transport truck had been carrying dangerous goods. Fortunately, it had already dropped off its payload.

Crews contained fluid leaks from both vehicles after zeroing both of them and turning the scene over to the RCMP to determine the cause of the crash. They had enough time to get back to the station, clean the trucks off, and get a bit of rest in before they were called out once more.

"At approximately 10:30 in the evening, we were called to another two-vehicle collision that occurred this time inside the city limits," Feser said. "This was at the Tim Hortons parking lot on King Street."

This time, there was no cause for any further response from the fire department as it was only a minor fender bender. The Estevan Police Service will look into the crash further to see if they can determine the cause.
