Property theft in the community is always an ongoing issue.

"Sometimes in various areas of the city, people tend to leave property in their yards such as bikes and tools," explains Estevan's Police Service Deputy Chief, Murray Cowan.

"The big thing is when you are done doing your work for the day or you are going in for the night, is to clean your yard up and put things away. If you make it inviting for people to commit thefts then it's more likely to happen. Items should be put away and preferably in a shed or other area if you don't have that available. The best thing is to put your belongings out of sight and away so people don't see them."

Vehicle theft is another issue for Estevan and surrounding areas.

"People walk around at night and will walk past a vehicle on the street then pull the door handle, if the door opens then it gives them a chance to go through your vehicle. These crimes are difficult to detect with officers patrolling because if they see somebody in a vehicle, it could just be the owner that is grabbing something out of their car," he shares.

"The big thing is to keep valuables out of sight or better yet bring them inside and lock your vehicle at night. Remember to bring your keys inside, people tend to leave their keys in their car, sometimes in the ignition or in obvious places such as the visor above the window or the ash tray. People who are looking for that opportunity will access those places and if they find a key then your car could very likely be missing in the morning."

"We ask that the community be vigilant on those things. For example if somebody is in your neighbors vehicle, you will know if that person should be there or not. If you see suspicious activity give our office a call."
